My costs rose; how much should I raise price to keep margin — and how much more expensive does the customer see?

Problem it solves

Cost of goods has risen and you need to change the price. The question is not “how much more expensive did it get”, but “what should the new price be so you keep what you used to keep — and how much more expensive does the customer see?”

The trap this tool removes is simple: most sellers add the same amount costs rose to the price. Rial profit stays the same, but percentage margin shrinks, because that same profit sits on a larger price. Keeping percentage margin needs a larger increase. Platform fees — a percent of price that grows with every price rise — are usually overlooked too.

This tool shows three suggested prices separately, how much more each costs the customer, and the reverse question: if you do not raise price at all, what happens to your margin.

Inputs

Amount input unit

If you choose Rial, all amounts are divided by 10 before calculation and results are shown in Toman.

Current state

The price you sell at today and the COGS of that one unit.

Price the customer pays today, excluding VAT. (to Toman)

Purchase price or production cost of one unit, before the increase. (to Toman)

Cost-of-goods increase

Either of these two is enough; if you enter both, they are checked for consistency.

For example 35 means cost of goods rose 35%. (Percent)

If you know the new figure, fill this; when it conflicts with the percent, this figure is used. (to Toman)

Show advanced settings (Other variable costs, fees, margin target, purchasing power)
Other variable costs per unit

Shipping, packaging, cards and any cost that comes with each unit sold; often rises at a different rate from the goods themselves.

Shipping, packaging, SMS, gifts—any cost that comes with each unit sold. (to Toman)

If these costs have not changed, leave blank. (Percent)

Platform or gateway fee

A percentage of selling price. Because it grows with price, it changes the answer and is often forgotten.

Marketplace, storefront or payment-gateway fee; on selling price. (Percent)

Target margin (optional)

If filled, price is calculated to reach this margin instead of preserving the current margin.

Leave blank to keep the same current margin. (Percent)

Purchasing power (optional)

This tool assumes no inflation rate on your behalf. If you want the “preserve purchasing power” price, enter the rate yourself with its source and period; that source is shown in the result.

A rate you took from an official source; this tool suggests no figure. (Percent)

Without a source, "preserve purchasing power" price is not calculated. This text appears next to the figure in results.

Calculation method and assumptions

  • New cost = current cost × (1 + increase percent), or the number you entered directly. If you enter both and they differ by more than 1%, the tool warns and uses the entered number.
  • Total variable cost per unit = unit cost + other variable costs; each with its own increase rate, because shipping and packaging usually do not rise with the goods.
  • Contribution profit per unit = price × (1 − fee percent) − total variable cost per unit. Margin means this profit’s share of selling price, not a markup on cost of goods.
  • Price 1 (hold percentage margin) = new variable cost ÷ (1 − fee % − margin). When the margin is the current margin, the denominator equals exactly “current variable cost ÷ current price”, so price rises in the same proportion as total variable cost — not only in the proportion that goods COGS rose.
  • Price 2 (preserve per-unit profit in currency) = (current contribution profit + new variable cost) ÷ (1 − fee percent). With no fees, that means add exactly the cost increase to price. Its increase is less than price 1 and lowers margin percentage.
  • Price 3 (preserve purchasing power) = current price × (1 + general inflation rate). Only you enter this rate and should also note its source and period; the tool assumes no inflation rate, price index, or exchange rate, and if rate and source are missing, this price is not shown at all.
  • If you fill in "margin target", price 1 is calculated to reach that target instead of preserving the current margin.
  • The sensitivity table repeats the Price 1 formula for cost-of-goods increases from 10% to 50%; other variable costs stay fixed at their new values.

Limitations and misuse

  • This tool’s output is unit “contribution profit”, not net profit: rent, salaries, warehouse, tax, and financing costs are not included. A price that keeps contribution margin does not necessarily keep net profit.
  • Sales volume is assumed unchanged when price changes. That is almost always wrong: a price increase usually cuts sales and takes back some recovered profit. For that side of the story, use the discount impact and true order profit tools.
  • No inflation rate, consumer price index or exchange rate exists in this tool or is fabricated. If you want a figure for "purchasing power", take it yourself from a source you cite and write the source and its period.
  • Enter COGS at replacement cost — what the next purchase will cost you, not what the last purchase cost. In inflation, those two differ a lot.
  • This tool is a calculator, not advice: none of these three prices is a pricing recommendation, and it does not see contracts, competition or demand elasticity.

Current selling price per unit
Current cost of goods per unit
Percent increase in unit cost
New COGS per unit
Other variable costs per unit
Percent increase in other variable costs
Platform or gateway fee — percent of price
Target margin — percent of selling price
General inflation rate — percent
Source and period of the inflation rate
